Your body needs energy to function — even when you’re doing nothing but lying on the couch, your body is burning calories to keep your heart beating, your lungs breathing, and your cells repairing themselves. This is called your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR).

This is why keto, intermittent fasting, low-carb, and Mediterranean diets can all lead to weight loss, even though they look completely different on paper. They all tend to create a calorie deficit — some by cutting out entire food groups, others by limiting your eating window, others by making you feel fuller on fewer calories.
There’s no metabolic magic that makes one approach inherently superior for fat loss. What matters more is which approach you can actually stick to long-term, because consistency beats perfection every time.
A common myth is that some people have a “slow metabolism” that makes weight loss impossible. While metabolic rate does vary between individuals based on factors like muscle mass, age, genetics, and hormone levels, the differences are usually smaller than people assume — often within a few hundred calories per day, not thousands.
The good news: you have some control over your metabolic rate. Building muscle through strength training increases your BMR, because muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue does. This is one reason strength training is often recommended alongside diet changes, not just cardio.
